10 Things

You may have seen it – a cartoon with two baby snakes talking to grandpa snake about the story of Creation. The serpent toddlers say, “…and then the bad woman gave the snake the apple and that is when all our troubles began…”  I found it so funny that it inspired me to decide to do a ten part commentary on a book I read a few years ago that a very progressive Christian friend sent me for Christmas.

The book is called 10 Things Your Minister Wants to Tell You (But Can’t Because He Needs His Job) by Rev. Oliver “Buzz” Thomas. If you are a Christian who does not rattle easily at paradigms that are diametrically opposed to your own  – odds are you will enjoy this book.  If you are not open, you will not like it and you will dislike my commentary even more. Let’s just dive right in shall we?

Chapter one starts off with “How Did It All Begin?” Rev. Thomas underscores how important our history of origins truly is. Maybe you are a person who has no interest in religion, and I get that and even appreciate and empathize however, whether you like it or not – if you live in the Unites States of America (and even more if you have kiddos) – the concept of where we sprouted or blew up from is a dangerously zealous topic especially when it comes to education and furthermore - it refuses to be ignored.

Rev. Thomas ought to know what he’s talking about seeing he’s provided court-ordered in-services at public schools where he and his colleagues were caught in the cross-hairs of 1st amendment battles. He bravely begins his book by pointing out that the book of Genesis has not just one creation story - but two.   Thomas explains that according to Hebrew tradition, the first creation story was written in poem form and was not intended to be taken literally. He goes further to say, “…the word that your Bible translates as day does not always mean a twenty-four hour time period in Hebrew. It is used to describe time periods of undesignated duration.”

The second creation story begins in Genesis 2:4 – this narrative involves Eve being created from Adam’s rib then convinces him to eat forbidden fruit that - like our cartoon points out in reverse – blows Eden to smithereens. I am ecstatic that Rev. Thomas explains how the story (sculpted quite skillfully by a patriarchal society) was designed to keep women in their place rather than the idea that God had to punish the “weaker sex” for getting into mischief.  Sliding this subject under a historical/critical microscope puts God in a very good light - a light that was almost snuffed out.

If the Bible were allowed to be esteemed as the word of God in public schools – can you imagine the ruckus over whose interpretation would be top dog? In a country where the founding fathers knew the dangers of religious persecution therefore made provision for freedom of worship - can you imagine if any one religion assumed itself as authority over all American citizens? Let's just imagine if Christianity became The Decider - which church's interpretation of the scripture would be the one to decide and who would be the one to decide which church?

Rev. Thomas rounds out this first chapter with more on the yin and yang of science and religion,"Science helps us understand the world around us, and religion helps us make sense of it all. In this case, good fences really do make good neighbors.”What do you think? How important is a literal interpretation of the bible? How do we know what is and what is not to be taken literally? And finally, what is (if any) the litmus test for authority on these matters?

If you are not hyperventilating by now then you may want to purchase your own copy.

Happy New Year

One thing the L2KH team has always been passionate about was helping people find the tools necessary to strengthen their spiritual path – Christian or not, religious or not. We’ve enjoyed talking to friends about what makes life important to us all and what it has taken for them to either begin a spiritual journey, enrich one they were already on or return to their spiritual and/or religious roots. We agreed that to truly see our value and place in the universe means to realize and then accept that we are lovable and beautiful as we are – not as someone else would have us be. Only by this truth are we then able to greet a world full of need and be able to roll up our sleeves and get busy loving it as we love ourselves.

Last October, our tiny team was dynamically transformed – we lost our beloved friend and founder – Michael Car. In an instant, priorities took their proper place and what was taken for granted one day - became our manna the next.   At the same time, our ministry’s goals heightened as we realized Michael gave us something that will live on in us – his fierce desire to continue the work in 1) helping others work their way out of fear and anxiety so often related to religious addiction and spiritual abuse and 2) pay it forward.  We all agree that our healing naturally causes a ripple effect that reaches far and wide and not just other humans -  but all of God’s creation. In fact, it's the only way we believe it is possible to make a meaningful impact for the cause of men, women and children as well as animals and our environment. We have figured out a formula that so far seems to work and it goes like this: When our greatest joy meets one of the world’s greatest needs – look out, because wonderful things are bound to happen! So, it is with great pleasure and anticipation  to provide the world with on and off-line content that spans a broad and creative library of human interest.  We hope this content will inspire all of us on days we feel hopeless, like when we lose something precious like a job, our dignity, our health, a spouse, a child or dear friend.

In keeping our promise to Michael and to all of you, we want to kick off 2011 with a neat story that hits close to home as well as soothes our spirits and brings us hope. A friend of ours, Michelle, had taken in a mama cat and her eight kittens and fostered them until she could find them a new home. Michael had shared how he and Michelle had prayed over the kittens and would voice his concern over their welfare stating that, “God just has to be loving and kind because if we – as puny humans – can love some stray cats this much – how much more is God able?”

Michael was right! However a person might understand God to be – as the universe or as a loving force or as Jesus Christ – one thing is for sure and that is God is Love. Click on the video above and see how these precious furry friends found a loving and caring home all because someone cared enough to make a difference.

May 2011 bring us all closer to understanding our worth and thereby seeing how interconnected and valuable all of creation truly is. Happy New Year of Growth and Compassion!

Walking The Walk

Living in Redlands, California has its advantages like being minutes from work, school, doctor and dentist offices. This is easy for me to say since I have somewhere to call home.  I don't have to endure downtown  cold winter nights or stress over where I will get my next meal or shower, but there are plenty who do and they are not just adults.  How does that make me feel? Helpless. Angry. Frustrated.  A couple of  friends of mine recently asked, "So, are we supposed to be happy because we are blessed somehow? Why aren't we on the streets?  Why does it seem the world is so unfair? Where is God in all this? What can I do to make a difference?"
Just today, I picked up today's newspaper and read some startling stats about our local homeless youth. 106 youth we surveyed in Redlands starting in July 2009 and ending in July 2010. This survey revealed that 52% of these young people were homeless and that 84% had made attempts at getting off the street, but failed. If they are lucky, someone might offer them a couch or floor to crash on.  Most of the time though, they are not so lucky. Many sleep in bushes or behind buildings or they might just end up walking aimlessly all night till the sun comes up when they begin their journey all over again. It's exhausting and it's happening right here in my own town. It's happening right in your own town.

Thank God for Heidi Mayer who founded YouthHope in Redlands about a year ago - a non-profit dedicated to helping at-risk youth ages 14-24. Heidi has rallied volunteers and local businesses, even the Redlands Police department -  in meeting the needs of these kids that otherwise would go unnoticed.

Heidi noticed.  And now - with help of volunteers - provides shelter and hot meals for the youth at The Blessing Center - another organization that is determined to extend love and compassion.  If you feel inspired to lend a hand or help out by donation click here for more information on how you can make a difference in the life of a child.  To get a first-hand up close idea of what these kids are experiencing click here.  Where is God? God is here! God is here in the hands of Heidi Mayer and all those who donate their time and energy to make our small town and the entire Inland Empire, a better place for its at-risk youth.

Direction

Live To Know Him Ministry is standing before a new chapter in the "book" we began "writing" just about 6 years ago.  Please remember us in your prayers? We are experiencing new and unexpected dynamics yet we trust God to help our little team continue to learn and apply new ways to share the love and grace He has given us.  We want to acknowledge and express appreciation for all the old and many new friends who have stepped forward in love offerings of friendship, care and concern. These overtures are truly priceless and we are grateful!

Non Violence for the Violent

Have you ever struggled with Jesus' hard saying in the Gospel of Matthew 5 where he addresses the resistance of evil? Jesus says, "You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."

This passage poses challenges to even the most astute follower of Christ.  Does Jesus suggest Christians be doormats?  Does He mean we are to be passive and allow oneself to be taken advantage of?  Surely He wants us to opppose evil - right?  Professor Wink opens us up to a Third Way - an alternative to natural human flight or flight responses.  Its the way of Jesus - a way of non violence. Here is part 1 of an interesting talk on a method we think God would ask us to consider:

In Loving Memory

Evangelist Billy Graham once said, "We are not cisterns made for hoarding, we are channels made for sharing."  This quote sums up the loving life of Michael Car, Creator and Founder of Live 2 Know Him Ministries.  In fact, the ministry was borne exactly out of that - a love to share.  Michael's passion was to share God's principles of love with anyone and everyone who would listen.  After reaching a low point of weighing nearly 500 pounds and being sentenced to a drug rehab program - God intervened in Michael's life and began the healing process. Michael personally experienced Jesus Christ and was convinced it's not what you know its who knows you.

Michael made his home in Northern California where he enjoyed the outdoors with friends and family. When  Michael wasn't fighting for freedom and peace - he was riding his mountain bike with Tequila and Luna - his two canine buddies; meeting a friend for lunch; helping someone somewhere with something; smiling; laughing and sharing God in the way he lived life and touched others.

Aside from Michael's primary goal of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, he was a great cook and loved studying nutrition and health - especially after experiencing his own personal life transformation.  He also loved classic rock like Led Zeppelin and Journey and would sing at the top of his lungs for you and if the Giants were playing - look out!  We always knew who to call for the score.  Mike was not shy - he loved people and he loved public speaking.  He could not help but share with others what God had shared with him  and he was good at it!  He taught enthusiastic bible studies at his home church, led out a men's group and gave occasional sermons.

He taught us many things like patience, humor, and joy.  What  stands out most clearly was his kindness and unconditional love.  He was an empathic friend who would not hesitate to send a voicemail or email telling us just how much God loved us and how much he, Michael, loved us.  One of his favorite mantras was, "Everyone is a treasure!"  And he meant it.

Rest in Peace our dear brother, friend and colleague. We have hope, Michael, that some day we will meet up again and until then, we will carry on the mission of eternal life -  Living to Know Him just like you'd enourage us to.  Michael J. Car  January 1962 - October 2010

Love Language Retreat

Live To Know Him Ministry's Michael Car is revving up the Gospel at the Redwood City Seventh-Day Adventist church and would like to invite you to come. The church is sponsoring a free admission retreat, for this weekend, October 29 & 30, featuring James and Rise Rafferty from Light Bearers Ministry. This entire weekend will be a Christ-centered, Faith-focused and Relationship-driven weekend. There will be 5 unique sessions that will build on each other and one final Q and A session that will be unique all on its own.  And no worries if you miss a session, there will be a complete review the following evening.

First session is Friday night at 7:30 pm. Sabbath starts with Divine service at 10 am. And a unique Sabbath school at 11:15 followed by a fellowship meal where all are welcome. We will resume at 2:30 pm and again at 5 pm, immediately followed by Q and A session.

Session’s theme will center on the book of Hebrews detailing how to experience, keep, or recover a relationship with God. The foundation of this relationship is love. This love is primarily God’s love toward us, but it also includes our love response to Him, which spills over to others. The book of Hebrews introduces a relational God who speaks to us in the languages of love. There are seven basic love languages that define our relationships with people. They are gifts, physical touch and acts of service, quality time and words of affirmation, correction and commitment. Each one of these love languages is clearly emphasized in the relational language of Hebrews.

This entire weekend is presented with only a request for prayer and encouragement that you join us. Sessions, fellowship meals and childcare all sponsored by the Redwood City Seventh-Day Aventist Church.  Contact info: michael@livetoknowhim.org  Location: The Redwood City Seventh-day Adventist Church 1504 Brewster Ave Redwood City 94062-1323

Love Changes Everything

An Australian couple recently experienced a miracle when their infant son, Jamie, drew his first breath after the medical staff pronounced him dead. Physicians and staff spent 20 minutes attempting to resuscitate the tiny baby boy and finally gave up. The child was then handed over to the parents who held and nuzzled him, saying their tearful farewells.  A midwife videotaped the baby's first movements on camera and sure enough, Jamie was once dead but now, alive!  Many are calling Jamie a miracle baby and indeed he is!  Could it be yet another bit of evidence testifying the power of love? Jamie's mum laid her frail son's body on her naked chest where I believe God used her as a heart-swelling conduit of love and compassion so great, it beckoned Jamie to life as Jesus beckoned Lazarus from the tomb, "Come out!"

As Christians, we seek a spiritual birth in Jesus Christ and some days, it is like we are walking in a fog, or worse, through a valley of the shadow of death.  Jesus says, "Take heart! For I have overcome the world!" and that He will finish the good work he began in us (John 16:33,Phil 1:6).  We too, like Jamie, can experience a second chance at life and life more abundantly (John 10:10).

Peace and love to Jamie and his family - may they continue to flourish in the life-giving force of love that stems from God.

Reason for Yourself

Everywhere you look you will see a war of two basic  principles – dark and light. George Lucas and J.R.R Tolkien have contributed great depictions of this ancient struggle that theologians and Hollywood alike attempt to untangle.  While a movie abbreviates a resolution to this conflict in a mere 2 hours, real life testifies to the effectual – albeit lengthy - principle of process.

Recently a report was issued explaining a rise in exorcisms. So much in fact is the increase,  the Catholic church will be dedicating an exorcism center. Thomas Williams, Dean of Theology at the Regina Apostolorum Pontifical University in Rome attributes this increase to,”… increased interest in the occult, even in Satanism. And the second reason I think is because people are less careful. Honestly, they maybe pray less. They play around with things they shouldn't play with, and then they get into trouble. ... “ Whether or not you believe harmful spirits can inhabit a human – one thing is for sure, people are less careful. People are less careful in how they gather and distribute information  which reveals they are less careful in where they place their trust...

Freely Given

Gene and I were online friends who never met face-to-face but that didn't matter - he inspired me on a regular basis with his thought provoking ideas regarding God and freeedom of choice.  We both enjoyed sharing our ideas freely on an e-list where several of us (all Christian) would discuss our musings on God and often hard-to-tackle topics. I think what I appreciated most about Gene was his warm way of sharing - not straining to convince others to think like him. He and I did not agree on all things and there are even things in the following article I take issue with but guess what? Gene would encourage me to do so! That being said, I would suggest you take what you like and leave the rest.  Gene passed away close to four years ago but his ideas live on in places like this. Miss you, Gene.  Gene writes....

An Anarchist wants the freedom to do as they please whenever they please however they please. This freedom may run contrary to any other person’s freedom to act and do as they please if it interferes with the individual Anarchist’s desires. Most of us would agree that this is a very self-centered freedom that wouldn’t work for everyone. As most will agree, there is really no element of equality or fair treatment for all in the world of Anarchism.

It is also evident that living under a dictator or even a group of people with absolute control over the populace you may have some equality or fair treatment but seldom as many rights and privileges that other forms of government may give. Yet don’t some people view God as the Supreme Dictator over the entire universe? Can’t He enforce His Law and force us humans to obey? Since this should be the right of any Creator why expect anything different? But then if He can use force to correct wrongs why does He delay wiping out all the evil from the world? Wouldn’t all Christians who believe in such a God praise Him if that was what He did?...
