Non Violence for the Violent

Have you ever struggled with Jesus' hard saying in the Gospel of Matthew 5 where he addresses the resistance of evil? Jesus says, "You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."
This passage poses challenges to even the most astute follower of Christ. Does Jesus suggest Christians be doormats? Does He mean we are to be passive and allow oneself to be taken advantage of? Surely He wants us to opppose evil - right? Professor Wink opens us up to a Third Way - an alternative to natural human flight or flight responses. Its the way of Jesus - a way of non violence.
